Every Energy Grant Available
to Irish Homeowners in 2026
The Irish government provides substantial financial support through SEAI for homeowners who upgrade to renewable energy and improve their home's energy efficiency. This is the most comprehensive guide to every grant available in Ireland in 2026 — amounts, eligibility and exactly how to apply.
For all SEAI Better Energy Homes grants, you must apply and receive approval before any installation works begin. Works carried out before approval will not be eligible for grant support. Your SEAI registered installer will handle the application process on your behalf in most cases.
Solar PV Panels
Grant support for solar photovoltaic panel installation on residential properties.
- Owner-occupied home built before 2021
- Must use a SEAI registered installer
- Home must have a BER assessment
- Grant not previously claimed for solar
Your SEAI registered installer submits the application on your behalf before works begin. Grant is paid directly to the installer and deducted from your bill.
7–10 years typical payback period
Heat Pumps
Ireland's largest residential energy grant for air source and ground source heat pump installation.
- Owner-occupied home built before 2021
- Home must have a BER of B3 or above after installation
- Existing oil or gas boiler being replaced
- Must use a SEAI registered installer
- Property must meet heat loss requirements
Apply through the SEAI Better Energy Homes scheme online. A technical assessment of your home is required before installation to confirm suitability.
6–10 years with current energy prices
Biomass Boilers
Grant support for wood pellet, wood chip and log gasification boiler systems.
- Owner-occupied home in Ireland
- Home built before 2021
- Replacing existing heating system
- Must use SEAI registered installer
- Boiler must meet efficiency standards
Apply through SEAI Better Energy Homes before works begin. Installer handles application in most cases. Grant paid after works are completed and inspected.
8–12 years depending on fuel costs
Home Insulation
Grants for attic, wall and floor insulation — the highest return on investment of any home energy upgrade.
- Owner-occupied home built before 2011
- Must use SEAI registered contractor
- Home must be your primary residence
- Previous grants do not prevent eligibility for different measures
Apply online through SEAI Better Energy Homes. You can combine multiple insulation measures in a single application to maximise grant value.
3–8 years for most insulation measures
Solar Thermal
Grant for solar thermal panels that heat water using sunlight, reducing water heating bills by up to 70%.
- Owner-occupied home
- Home built before 2021
- Must use SEAI registered installer
- System must meet SEAI technical standards
Apply through SEAI Better Energy Homes scheme. Can be combined with solar PV and other measures in a single application.
6–9 years typical
Battery Storage
New in 2026 — grant support for home battery storage systems installed alongside solar PV panels.
- Must be installed alongside new solar PV panels
- Battery must meet SEAI technical specification
- Owner-occupied home
- SEAI registered installer required
Claimed as part of the solar PV grant application. Cannot be claimed as a standalone measure without solar PV installation.
Reduces overall solar system payback by 1–2 years
BER Assessment
Contribution towards the cost of a Building Energy Rating assessment, required for most SEAI grant applications.
- Required for most Better Energy Homes grants
- Must be carried out by SEAI registered BER assessor
- Home must not have a valid BER already
Book a BER assessment before starting any energy upgrade works. The €50 contribution is applied when you submit your main grant application.
Immediate — unlocks thousands in grants
Geothermal Energy
Ground source heat pumps that use geothermal energy qualify for the same heat pump grant of up to €6,500.
- Suitable site with adequate ground area
- Owner-occupied home built before 2021
- Must use SEAI registered installer
- Technical site assessment required
Apply through SEAI Better Energy Homes. A site assessment is required to confirm your property has suitable ground conditions for geothermal installation.
8–14 years depending on installation cost
Wind Energy (CEG)
No direct capital grant for domestic wind turbines, but the Clean Export Guarantee pays you for electricity exported to the grid.
- Wind turbine registered with SEAI
- ESB Networks notified of installation
- Electricity supplier CEG contract signed
- Farmers may qualify for TAMS III grant
Register your turbine with SEAI and notify ESB Networks. Then apply to your electricity supplier for a CEG contract to receive export payments.
8–15 years depending on wind resource

- Registered community group or cooperative
- Minimum number of participating homes
- Must appoint a project coordinator
- Works must be carried out by SEAI approved contractors
Apply through SEAI Community Energy programme. A project coordinator is appointed who manages the application and works on behalf of all participants.
Often faster than individual upgrades due to economies of scale
New Build NZEB Support
Support and requirements for Nearly Zero Energy Buildings — new homes must meet NZEB standards in Ireland since 2021.
- Applies to all new residential builds since 2021
- BER of A2 or above required
- Renewable energy system mandatory
- High insulation standards required
NZEB compliance is built into the building regulations for all new homes. Work with your architect and builder to ensure compliance from the design stage.
Built into purchase — no separate payback calculation
Stack Your Grants for Maximum Value
One of the most important things Irish homeowners miss is that most SEAI grants can be combined. You do not have to choose between insulation and solar or a heat pump and battery storage — you can claim multiple grants in a single application and dramatically increase the total value.
The SEAI Better Energy Homes scheme allows you to apply for multiple measures in a single application. A good SEAI registered installer will advise you on which combination of measures gives you the best return and total grant value for your specific home.
How to Apply for SEAI Grants
The SEAI grant application process is straightforward and your installer handles most of the paperwork. Here is the step by step process for the Better Energy Homes scheme which covers most residential grants.
Book a BER assessment with an SEAI registered BER assessor. This establishes your home's current energy rating and is required for most grant applications. Cost is €150–€250 and €50 is covered by SEAI.
Only SEAI registered contractors and installers can carry out works that qualify for grants. Get at least three quotes. Ask each installer to confirm which grants you qualify for and the total value.
Your installer submits your grant application to SEAI online before any works begin. You will receive written approval from SEAI — do not start works until this arrives.
Once SEAI approval is received, your installer carries out the agreed works. Keep all documentation including contracts, receipts and technical specifications.
After works are complete, a post-works BER assessment confirms the improvement in your home's energy rating. This is required to release the grant payment.
SEAI pays the grant directly to your installer in most cases. You pay only the balance after the grant is deducted. Payments typically take 4–8 weeks after works are completed.
